PhD Opportunities in the Development of Next-Generation CMOS Devices-Ireland

January 29, 2008

PhD studentships in Ireland.

Science Foundation Ireland has recently made a major award of a
Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) Grant to a group of researchers
based at the Tyndall National Institute and university college Cork,
Dublin City University and Queen s University Belfast together with
industrial partners INTEL Ireland and Seagate Technologies. This SRC
is entitled FORME - for Functional Oxides and Related Materials for
Electronics. The specific aims of this cluster are to study a range
of processes associated with the development of next-generation CMOS
devices and also to work towards device architecture that go far
beyond CMOS technology. The team concerned represents a mixture of
Materials Chemists, Physicists and industrial partners with
activities spanning materials synthesis and characterisation,
advanced thin layer growth, surface science studies and the optical,
electrical and magnetic characterisation of a wide range of oxides
and related materials.

Following this award the FORME SRC wishes to announce a major
postgraduate student recruitment opportunity, through which up to 14
postgraduate students will be appointed across partner laboratories
in Cork and Dublin.

APPLICATION are encouraged from suitably qualified individuals
possessing a first class or upper second class Honours degrees (or
equivalent), in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science,
Electrical/Electronic Engineering or closely related disciplines.

Doctoral Field award in resource and environmental economics-Canada

Awards for Doctoral Fieldwork Document(s) 1 of 7

EEPSEA provides a limited number of awards, to cover the costs of fieldwork required for doctoral degree programs. The awards are open to nationals of EEPSEA member countries who intend to remain in or return to SE Asia following completion of their studies.
The awards cover the costs of fieldwork for up to one year, including one return economy class airfare. Requests for tuition or stipend during the fieldwork year will not be considered. Awardees will be eligible and in fact are encouraged to apply for subsequent EEPSEA research awards, after completing their studies and returning to work in SE Asia.
Applicants should submit the following documents to the EEPSEA Secretariat:

a research proposal of 10-15 pages, following the format described in the EEPSEA Guidelines for Research Proposals;
CV of the applicant;
a letter from the applicant describing:
the applicant’s career plans after completion of studies; and
other sources of finance for the applicant’s doctoral program (both financing already secured and application pending);

a confidential letter of recommendation from the applicant’s thesis supervisor;
an explanation of the status of the fieldwork proposal at the applicant’s university (e.g. has it been approved by the thesis committee?); and
a transcript showing the applicants’ courses and grades to date.
These items should be sent by mail to EEPSEA, c/o IDRC, 22 Cross Street, #02-55, South Bridge Court, Singapore 048421. In addition, item 1 - the proposal - should be sent as an email attachmnet o hfrancisco@idrc.org.sg. The file name for the attachment should include the author’s name and the date.
There are no fixed deadlines for submission of requests for thesis awards.
Applications will be reviewed by the EEPSEA Secretariat and Selection Committee. Where feasible, applicants will be invited to one of EEPSEA’s biannual research workshops.
The maximum period covered by the awards is one year and the maximum amount is CAD20,000.

PhD reserach award from EEPSEA

Research Awards in Environmental Economics for SE Asian Scholars

The theme of EEPSEA‘s research program is the internalization of external costs. There is widespread interest in minimizing pollution and resource degradation by insuring that economic agents face the full costs of their activities. But many questions remain to be answered: What is the economic value of the environmental damage incurred by a given activity? What roles can sectoral, macroeconomic and trade policies play in achieving full-cost pricing? What roles do community management of resources, changes in property rights and other institutional factors play? What factors affect the political and administrative feasibility of price changes? Does full-cost pricing have negative effects on the poor and how might these be mitigated? What are the alternatives to pricing policy? What are the implications of full-cost pricing for economic growth and structural change?

Projects to date have tended to fall within four areas:
a) management of forests and wetlands
b) policy instruments for control of urban pollution
c) resource pricing
d) economy-wide and global issues.
Most applicants attend one of EEPSEA’s courses before or in conjunction with their research project. Budget ceilings for research projects are CAD20,000-28,000, depending on the country. Researchers may be affiliated with a university, government or non-government organization and grants are normally made to that institution. Most projects are carried out by teams of researchers.
Proposals are sent to experts for written review. Those recommended for further consideration must then be revised and presented in a working group meeting at the next EEPSEA biannual meeting. Further revisions are usually called for, until the project is judged satisfactory and a grant approved. After approval, interim findings are presented and critiqued every six months until the project is completed. Researchers receive frequent technical assistance and literature from the Secretariat and resource persons. Final reports from successful projects are widely disseminated by EEPSEA and by the researchers themselves through publications, the media, and consultations with policy makers.
Proposals are reviewed in twice-yearly competitions. The deadline for these are February 1 and August 1. Those wishing to apply for research awards should consult the following documents:
