The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies seeks PhD
& Postdoctoral Fellowships - Sustainable Development

Closing date: 25 April 2008

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS)
is now accepting applications for its three fellowship programmes:
UNU-IAS PhD Fellowships, UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships, and
JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships.

The closing date for applications is 25 April 2008.

Please see website for further details:
http://www.ias. unu.edu/sub_ page.aspx? catID=6&ddlID= 127

UNU-IAS is a multi-thematic, interdisciplinary, research and training
centre located in Yokohama, Japan. The Institute’s fellowship
programmes provide young scientists, policy makers, and developing
country scholars with the opportunity to expand their intellectual
vision beyond a single scientific field.

UNU-IAS PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered for a period of
10 months beginning in October 2008. JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships
are offered for 12-24 months beginning in November 2008.

Postdoctoral candidates must have completed a PhD degree, and PhD
candidates must be at the advanced stage of their doctoral
dissertation. Candidates’ current research must be closely related to
one of the thematic areas of the Institute.

PhDs in Multimodal cortical system analysis-Juelich

For our Institute of Neuroscience and Biophysics – Medicine we are seeking

2 Ph.D. Students for three-year projects
Theme: Multimodal cortical system analysis

The Institute for Neuroscience and Biophysics – Medicine at the
Research Center Jülich provides an excellent multi-disciplinary and
interactive research environment close to the culturally vibrant
cities of Aachen, Düsseldorf and Köln. Within the institute we combine
expertise in neuroimaging (research-dedicated 1.5T/3T/4T MRI systems,
high-field ani-mal MR, PET, combined human PET – 3 T MR system),
neuroscience and clinical research with state-of-the- art laboratories
for histological and neurochemical analysis such as receptor
autoradiography.

The research focus of the "Cortial Systems and Neurotransmitter
Receptors" group (Head: Prof. Dr. Karl Zilles) lies in the multimodal
integration of anatomical and func-tional data in order to gain
insight into the mechanisms underlying brain function and dysfunction.
In particular we are striving to combine information on the cortical
anatomy with functional neuroimaging, models of effective connectivity
and pharmacological approaches to investigate visual feature
processing and cortical motor control.

We are now looking for two PhD students with a strong interest in this
multidisciplinary research. A background in neuroanatomy and/or fMRI
analysis techniques (SPM, FSL, MATLAB etc) would be of advantage,
readiness to learn new methods a necessary requirement. Applicants
should have a degree in Neuroscience, Psychology, Medicine,
Informatics, Biology or related areas.

Payment will correspond to salary grade 13/2 Collective Agreement for
the Civil Service (TVöD). Equal opportunities is an important
cornerstone of our staff policy at Research Centre Jülich, for which
we have been awarded the „TOTAL E-QUALITY" award. Applications from
women are therefore particularly welcome. Applications from disabled
persons are welcomed.

Both positions are available immediately and search will continue
until candidates have been selected.

For further information, please see
http://www.fz- juelich.de/ inb/inb-3/ or contact Dr. Simon Eickhoff
(S.Eickhoff@fz- juelich.de), to whom applications including the names
of two referees should be sent.

BIOINFORMATICIAN / STATISTICIAN

The Gene Center Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians -University) is seeking 2
PhD candidates who want to join our Computational Biology Group. Our
aim is to develop and apply statistical models that provide insights
into the transcriptional regulation of the cell on a molecular level.

The positions involve statistical and bioinformatic analysis of genome
wide datasets and support in experimental design. The ideal applicant
should have an appropriate university degree in computer science,
mathematics, physics, statistics or bioinformatics. Experience in
bioinformatics, statistical analysis of large datasets as well as good
programming skills (in particular in the programming language R) are
advantageous. Good communication and interpersonal skills are
essential, since we closely collaborate with excellent biological
research groups of the Gene Center.

A contract for up to 3 years (salary TV-L, E13/2) will be offered to
